Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (KTK)

This park is the result of the merger of two adjoining sanctuaries: the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park (South Africa) and the Gemsbok National Park (Botswana), creating Africa's first transfrontier conservation project in a giant 37.991 km2 shared park.

The two parks are now effectively one.
If nothing else, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a monument to the vision, the goodwill and the spirit of co-operation between two nations.
It should prove, however, to be a great deal more, for it offers sights and experiences far beyond the usual.

There are now four entrances: the original one at Two Rivers; a second at Mata Mata on the Namibia border; the third in the far north, at Kar Pan, on the Botswana side (this is the distal end of the Gemsbok Wilderness Trail); the fourth at Mabuasehube in the east.
The two southern entrances have immigration and other facilities.

The South African National Parks amenities are all well developed, and Botswana is rapidly coming up to speed.
A shop at Twee Rivieren stocks a wide range of items, as well as fuel.
For accomodation, the rest camp offers cottages, chalets and campsites.
Visitors entering from Botswana may make use of these facilities once entry formalities have been completed.

There are no chalets yet on the Botswana side, but campsites are available at each entrance, and ablution facilities at all but KAR.
There are also six campsites, each with fireplace, showers, shade structures and pit latrine on the Botswana side of the Nossob River, at Rooiputs, about 25 km along the river road.

Entry fees into the KTK differ from other Botswana parks.
There are three main sand roads in the park, all in first-rate condition.
One extends 157 km up to the Nossob River to Nossob Camp, and continues for a further 128 km (along the river) to Union's End.
There is no exit here into Namibia.

A second road runs beside the Auob River for 118 km joins the two river roads and affords excellent views of the drier Kalahari countryside, with its typical, stabilised rest camps.
Although the park has a fluctuating complement of game, a visit is always well rewarded.

The best time is probably between January and April.
A stay of at least two days is recommended; during which you can expect to see, among other wildlife, gemsbok, eland, hartebeest, wildebeest, as well as wild-dogs, lion, cheetah and jackal.
A fairly new attraction is the organised night drive, with a good chance of sighting brown hyaena, bat-eared fox and possibly leopard.

A very appealing development some years ago was the opening of the Gemsbok Wilderness Trail.
The success of this led to the opening of a second trail, the Mabuasehube Wilderness Trail.
Both are described in my next posts.
