Pans on the north side of the Nossob tend to have a linear, parallel arrangement, possibly reflecting ancient north-south drainage lines emptying into the river.
Opalescent and elongated, they nestle between long, low dunes and almost always host game animals, which sample the salt and trace elements that these features so conveniently collect and concentrate.
With lower and more erratic rainfall, this part of Botswana's Kalahari is markedly different from the desert elsewhere.
The sands are redder and the vegetation more sparse and stark.
The parallel lines of sharply defined dunes provide endless variety to the scenery and, being so utterly remote, a sense of wilderness.

The Gemsbok Wilderness Trail, passing through the landscape described above, starts at Grootbrak, just over 220 km west along the Nossob.
Near this point is the Polentswa campsite, located in a beautiful stand of trees.
Like Rooiputs, it too has pit latrines, rustic showers and shade shelters.

From Grootbrak, the trail follows the route taken in 1908 by a specially trained German force that had been sent to hunt down a band of about 80 Hottentots who had ambushed earlier German patrols.
It circles through such exotic places as Red Rambuka, Twee Rambuka, Kaa Pan and Setachwe Pan, close to where the final battle is thought to have been fought.
A minimum of two four-wheel-drive vehicles MUST travel together.

Travellers may return to their starting point or leave via the Kaa Gate at the north end.
In the latter case, they continue along the road through Zutshwa via two spectacular pans to Hukuntsi.
There is an airstrip at Kaa Gate.
Apart from a trip along the wilderness trail, a visit to KTP does not necessarily a 4X4 vehicle: an ordinary saloon car can negotiate the three main roads and get to any of the campsites.
The park is open all year round.

It is important to bear the following in mind:
- Advance booking is obligatory
- All relevant fees for the full period of your stay within the park are payable before you start the trail
- Check-in at Two Rivers before starting off: this is essential for safety tracking. Collect a trail baton to carry with you, it signifies that your use of the trail has been authorised
- The time allocated for the trail is three days and two nights; you may not take a shorter or longer time
- Travel in an anti-clockwise direction, starting at Polentswa (turn off from the Nossob road at Grootbrak) and finishing north of Lijersdraai, also on the Nossob road
- Because the start of the trail is so far from the entrance gate, it is recommended that you spend the night before and the night after the trail at different campsites, for which separate bookings should be made
- Remember that you are totally responsible for your own safety
- You must be completely self-sufficient for the whole trip, carrying your own water (minimum 10 litres per person per day), food, fuel, vehicles fluids, tools, firewood, spade, two spare tyres or tyre repair kit and other essential and recommended items
- The trail is about 257 km long; allow for an average speed of 20 km/h
- A 4X4 is essential (maximum 3.500 unladen weight; minimum of two and maximum of five vehicles in any one party; trailers are not permitted)
- Campsites are designated for the first night at Lang Rambuka. No other areas may be used. Note that sleeping outside without a tent is extremely dangerous: keep tent flaps zipped up
- The group leader is responsible for the actions and conduct of the entire group, and must observe a few basic bush rules to ensure that the trail remains unspoilt for those who follow:
* RULE 1: Stick to the track (see map supplied by park). No off-track driving is permitted
* RULE 2: Take special care not to start a grass fire
* RULE 3: Campfires should be lit on the sites of previous fires; fire slabs and ash pits are
provided
* RULE 4: Dig holes at least 40 cm deep for toilet purposes, and burn all toilet paper
* RULE 5: Leave no litter whatsoever, not even cigarette ends. Any litter left by previous
users should be collected, and any other obvious breach of the rules by previous
users should be reported. The culprits will be traced and appropriate action taken
* RULE 6: Cause no harm or harassment to wildlife
- Check-out at Two Rivers (which will complete safety tracking), and hand in the trail baton
