Gaborone

Gaborone began its life as "Gaberone's Village" on the west bank of the Ngotwane River, some distance to the east of the modern city.
It took its name from the chief of the Batlokwa tribe, whose village was on the east bank of the Ngotwane River.
It was established in 1890 and was for some time the administrative centre for the southern part of the Bechuanaland Protectorate.

At that time, there was a great deal of political activity both within the Protectorate and around its borders.
Britain was sufficiently concerned to believe it necessary to increase the strenght of the Bechuanaland Border Police from 350 to 450, and to establish a centre of police strenght in the south of the country.

To that end, Colonel Frederick Carrington, Officer Commanding the Bechuanaland Border Police, was dispatched to seek a suitable site site for an additional fort in the south, preferably near Kolobeng or Molepolole.
He was unsuccessful and suggested instead a well-known crossroads on the banks of the Ngotwane River.
Thus, the administrative centre of Gaborone's Village was born.

Originally, what was to become the heart of modern Gaborone was a siding on a railway line some 4,8 km west of the village.
The place was selected as the site for the new capital city in 1964, and became the capital of the Republic of Botswana in September 1966.

Gaborone is not considered a prime tourist destination, since 90 per cent of leisure traffic goes to Ngamiland.
However, many people, mainly for business and diplomatic reasons, do come to the city and there are things of interest to see.

The tourist infrastructure isn't very well organised, so it's a matter of finding your own way around, and this is usually best done by hiring a car or contacting local guides.

Gaborone has a population of approximately 300,000.

The city centre is the Main Mall, with the City Council offices at one end and Government Offices at the other.

The bigger hotels have casinos, there are several large shopping malls, all with excellent restaurants, and two of them have cinema clusters.

The streets are safe to walk in; theft does occur but it is not a serious problem, it is wise not to offer temptation, however.
Tap water is perfectly safe to drink.

Years ago, cities went through a phase of "recognising" their antipodes.
That of Gaborone is marked by a plaque in a park in the city of Honolulu in Hawaii.
