The unusual name of this small village, set in the most southwesterly corner of Botswana, is derived from the place where a man called Bok once sank a well.

It stands at the confluence of two great sand rivers: the Molopo, which runs mostly westward along Botswana's southern border and here turns south, and the Nossob, which drains from the north and northwest through the famous Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Neither river commonly flows today, even after rain, but major floods have been recorded in both and may occur again a most incredible sight.

Today Bokspits is a struggling little centre whose residents once made a handly living from karakul wool production.

Petrol and diesel are available, and there is a police station, clinic and a well-stocked store.
